Weightlifting

Brief historical background on the development of weightlifting in Minsk

In 1913, a distinguished guest arrived in Minsk – the champion of St. Petersburg in weightlifting, a native of Minsk Arkady Aleksandrovich. Aleksandrovich arrived in his homeland with a special mission – to open a branch of the St. Petersburg sports society “Sanitas”.

Together with a great fan of strength sports, Vladislav Semenovich Sokoldinsky, a petition was submitted to the Minsk governor for permission to establish the “Sanitas” society in the city. By the end of the year, the petition was granted. Thus, the development of weightlifting in Minsk and Belarus began.

The KIM club, located on Bogodelnaya Street (now Komsomolskaya), gathered the best weightlifters of the city, among whom the later European and USSR Champion Lev Mekhanik and multiple USSR Champion Naum Lapidus stood out.
