Underwater sports

Scuba diving originated in the 20s of the XX century, when, in connection with the invention of underwater fins and masks, spearfishing and breath-holding diving (apnea) began to actively develop. With the invention of scuba diving, interest in the underwater world began to increase in all countries, which caused a new round in the development of underwater sports and the emergence of new disciplines. The International Federation of Underwater Sports is the World Confederation of Underwater Activities (CMAS), established in 1959 and today includes more than 130 federations on 5 continents.
In the USSR, underwater sports were actively developed under the auspices of DOSAAF. In 1959, the Underwater Sports Federation (FPS) was established to represent Soviet underwater sports on the international stage. In 1965, the FPS of the USSR was accepted as a member of the CMAS. Soviet athletes successfully competed at international competitions and very quickly became leaders. Belarusian champions: I.I.Buraya (Derenchuk) – master of sports of international class, 9-time champion of the USSR, 4-time world champion, 8-time European champion in underwater sports; T.Nazarova is a master of sports of international class, winner of the VI Spartakiad of the peoples of the USSR.

Aquathlon (underwater wrestling) is a discipline of underwater sports. Aquathlon is a competition between two athletes who perform short fights in the water and underwater while holding their breath, trying to take possession of the tape attached to the opponent’s ankle. The fight is fought in a 5 ×5 m ring marked with markers on the surface of the water, and consists of three rounds lasting 30 seconds with breaks between rounds of at least 1.5 minutes. Participants’ equipment: bathing suit, scuba diving mask, fins, 2 ankle cuffs, 2 cloth bands attached to the cuffs.

Spearfishing is a discipline of underwater sports conducted in open waters. The athlete’s task is to get certain types of fish by diving while holding his breath and using a special underwater rifle or crossbow for extraction. The use of breathing apparatus is not allowed. The goal is to extract the maximum number of certain fish species in a limited period of time in a given area of the water area.

Diving is a discipline of underwater sports conducted in a swimming pool. The competitions are held according to two programs: “diving — combined swimming 300 meters” and “diving — obstacle course 100 meters”.
“Diving — combined swimming of 300 meters”. The athlete’s task is to complete the distance in the shortest possible time, part of the distance must be completed underwater using a basic autonomous breathing apparatus, part — on the surface using a breathing tube. Equipment — a basic set of diving equipment.
“Diving obstacle course 100 meters”. The athlete’s task is to complete the distance in the shortest possible time, while performing certain exercises that demonstrate the basic skills of a diver (removing—putting on a mask, breathing from an alternative source with a partner, removing-putting on a set of equipment) and overcoming special obstacles. The time of passing the distance and the purity of performing exercises and overcoming obstacles are evaluated.
