Bullet shooting

History of shooting sports

Shooting competitions were first held at the 1896 Olympic Games in Athens (Greece), and in 1897 the first world championship was held in Lyon (France). However, the organization governing the competitions was created only in 1907. It included seven national federations: six from Europe (Austria, Belgium, France, Greece, Italy, Holland) and one from South America (Argentina). Representatives of these sports federations founded a new international organization on July 17, 1907 in Zurich called the International Union of National Shooting Federations and Associations, and the meeting in Germany itself is considered the first General Assembly of the ISSF. In 1915, the Union was temporarily dissolved, and on January 8, 1921, it was re-established in Paris as the International Shooting Union, uniting 14 countries from Europe, Asia and America. In 1939, the organization’s activities were suspended again, and in August 1947, the International Shooting Sport Union (USI) was organized, consisting of 13 countries. The union received a new name, the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF), on July 15, 1998, by decision of the General Assembly of the ISI.

The International Shooting Sport Federation recognizes the following competitions as ISSF Championships:

Olympic Games (held every four years);

World Shooting Championships (held in target shooting every four years, and in clay pigeon shooting every two years);

World Cups (held four times a year plus the final, only in Olympic disciplines);

Regional championships, such as the European Championship and the Pan-American Games (the frequency of holding is determined at the regional level).

These competitions are directly supervised by the Federation committees, and world records can be set in them.
