Rowing is academic

The history of academic rowing

Rowing is a cyclical sport. This is one of the few sports in which an athlete uses about 95% of the muscles of the entire body. The standard distance is 2000 meters.

The emergence and development of rowing began several millennia ago, long before man learned to use the power of the wind to move sailing ships. The first information about boat competitions was discovered in Egypt in the XV century BC in the form of wall paintings of boats with rowers. In 566-565 BC– rowing competitions were included in the program of the Panofin Games. In Rome, the design of the Colosseum arena allowed it to be turned into a pool in which battles on the water (naumachia) were held – it was in the second half of the I century BC. Later, during the construction of ships, special devices for fixing oars (rowlocks) began to be used, which turned out to be most convenient on large rowing vessels, where the rowers were located in two, three (biremes, triremes), sometimes four tiers, and their number reached up to 100 people.

In 1718, Peter the Great founded the Nevsky Fleet Yacht Club, the first in Russia, whose main task was to participate in parades on the Neva River during the holidays. There were no competition rules in those days, and the conditions of the races were negotiated each time in a special way. The rowers used their boats in competitions and tried to make improvements to them.

In 1830, the first boats with outrigger rowlocks appeared in England, which made it possible to make the hull narrower and lighter, and the vessel faster. After 25 years, movable seats began to be used. Now, when doing the stroke, the legs worked, and the speed increased even more. This period should be considered the beginning of the history of rowing, called “academic”.

Rowing was included in the program of the First Olympic Games in 1896, held in Athens. The races were supposed to take place in the open harbor of Piraeus, but were canceled due to bad weather. Since 1900, rowing races have been held regularly. The II Olympic Games were held in Paris. Rowers competed in four classes of vessels: singles, twos, fours and eights. Since 1962, once every 4 years, and since 1974, the World Championship has been held annually.

Academic rowing is widespread all over the world (the most popular in Western Europe, Russia, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and Romania). Its attractiveness consists, first of all, in a versatile wellness orientation that contributes to an increase in the level of functional capabilities of the body: the development of the respiratory system, circulatory system, improved coordination of movements, as well as the development of speed and strength capabilities.
