Kayaking and canoeing in Minsk

Historically, man has always sought to overcome water barriers to expand his sphere of influence. Floating objects have become the most important means of transportation on the water. The desire to create comfortable conditions for movement on the water contributed to the creation of specially equipped vessels: dugouts, papyrus boats, frames covered with animal skin or tree bark, etc.

The International Kayaking and Canoeing Federation (ICF) was founded on 01/20/1924. The Belarusian Canoe Association (BAC), as a public association, joined the (ICF) in 1992. The Minsk city organization NGO “BAK” was organized in 1993. Belarusian rowers took part in the Olympic Games for the first time as a separate team in 1996 in Atlanta, USA. The Olympic program consists of 8 men’s and 4 women’s types of kayaking and canoeing.

Kayaking and canoeing, as a sport, began to develop in Minsk in the fifties. The first refuge of the rowers was Komsomolskoye Lake and the Svisloch River.

Since 1980, the rowers of Minsk have occupied places at the Olympic Games:

X X VIII OI Athens 2004.
V.G. Makhnev: kayak – two 500m – 3rd place. kayak – four 1000m – 6th place
XXIX OI Beijing 2008.
V.G. Makhnev: kayak – four 1000m – 1st place. kayak – two 500m – 3rd place.
XXX OI London 2012.
V.G. Makhnev: kayak – two 200m – 2nd place.

The rowers of the city made a significant contribution to the medal piggy bank of the Republic, performing at championships, world and European championships.

In Minsk, kayaking and canoeing are cultivated in the following specialized educational and sports institutions:

776 people are engaged in kayaking and canoeing in Minsk

Athletes are trained by 27 full-time coaches, including 3 honored coaches of the USSR and the Republic of Belarus.
