Checkers

Draughts is a popular type of intellectual sport with a long history and popularity in Belarus and Minsk. The Belarusian draughts Championships have been held since 1924. There are 2 types of checkers: checkers-64 and checkers-100. Most tournaments are played in draughts-64. Draughts-100 began to develop in our country after the USSR joined the International Draughts Federation in 1952. The first Belarusian championship was held in 1954.

The Minsk draughts-64 and draughts-100 championships for men and women, the Minsk Team Cup (sh-64+ sh-100) are held annually in Minsk. The Minsk championships among boys and girls are held in 4 categories separately in sh-64 and sh-100 (similar to the world and European championships). Categories: under 10 (“hopes”), under 13 (“junior cadets”), under 16 (“cadets”) and under 19 (“juniors”) years old.

Republican and international draughts-64 tournaments are also held in Minsk: in memory of V. Grakovich (January), in memory of M. Geller (April), in memory of G.I.Khatskevich (October).

Draughts-100: Minsk International Tournament (June-July), Young Masters Tournament (September).

Draughts competitions are included in the year-round Spartakiad of working groups in sports. Regional and city sports contests are held. The children’s team tournament “Miracle Checkers” is held among school students. The Republican Draughts Spartakiad has been held since 2007. The Minsk team is the winner of the Spartakiad of recent years.

The draughts players of Minsk have great achievements in the international arena. Anatoly Gantvarg (sh-100), Arkady Plakhin (sh-64) and Andrey Valyuk (sh-64) became world champions for men and Elena Altshul (sh-100), Zoya Sadovskaya (Golubeva) (sh-100) for women.
