Athletics

History

Athletics as a sport appeared in Belarus in 1913, when a circle of sports enthusiasts was established in Gomel. At the same time, the first running, jumping and throwing competitions were held. Then they began to practice this sport in Minsk, Mogilev (Sokol circle) and Brest (Sports Lovers Circle).

Athletics competitions first appeared at the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens and have been included in the program of every subsequent Games since then. Since 1952, when Belarusian athletes as part of the USSR national team took part in the Olympic Games in Helsinki, representatives of our country have participated in all Olympiads. During this period, Belarusians have won 32 Olympic medals: 7 gold. 14 silver and 11 bronze.
