Greco-Roman wrestling

Greco-Roman wrestling (classical wrestling, French wrestling, Greco-Roman style wrestling) is a European type of martial arts in which an athlete must, with the help of a certain arsenal of technical actions (techniques), unbalance an opponent and press his shoulder blades to the carpet. In Greco-Roman wrestling, technical actions with feet (hooks, footrests, sweeps) and leg grabs with hands are prohibited. Classical wrestling was born in Ancient Greece and developed in the Roman Empire, and the modern form of Greco-Roman wrestling was formed in France in the first half of the XIX century.

Since 1896, the Olympic Games have been on the program, the World Championships since 1904, and the European Championships since 1898. The International Wrestling Federation — FILA (founded in 1912) has over 120 countries (1997).

The development of Greco-Roman wrestling in the Republic of Belarus and Minsk

In Belarus, wrestling similar to Greco-Roman wrestling has been known for a long time as belt wrestling and “cross wrestling”. There were other distinctive types of wrestling. In 1913, the Belarusian branch of the Sanitas Athletic and Gymnastic Society was opened in Minsk, where wrestling enthusiasts were taught under the leadership of the Belarusian athlete V. S. Sokoldinsky. In 1914, the 1st city championship among amateur wrestlers was held in Minsk. Wrestling clubs were created in Bobruisk, Borisov, Vitebsk, Gomel, Minsk. Since 1923, the championships of cities and districts of Belarus have been held. In 1924, the first All-Belarusian competitions were held, and from the same year wrestlers began to participate in all-Union competitions. In the post-war years, Belarusian wrestlers became one of the strongest in the USSR. Since 1992, Belarus has been accepted into the International Amateur Wrestling Federation. At the European Championships, Belarusian wrestlers in the team competition were repeatedly among the winners, and in 2003 they became winners. From 1958 to 2003, Belarusian wrestlers in the team competition were repeatedly among the winners, and in 203 they became winners.
