Chess

Chess is a popular type of intellectual sport with a long history and popularity in Belarus and Minsk. The Belarusian Chess Championships have been held since 1924.

The Minsk Chess Championships for men and women are held annually in Minsk. The Minsk Blitz Cup is held monthly. The Minsk championships among boys and girls are held in 7 categories separately (similar to the world and European championships). Categories: under 8 years old, under 10 years old, under 12 years old, under 14 years old, under 16 years old, under 18 years old, under 20 years old.

Republican and international tournaments are also held in Minsk: in memory of G.Veresov (June), the international tournament “Minsk-Open” (July), in memory of Yu.Kulagi (October), in memory of T.Zagorskaya (November). Chess competitions are included in the year-round Spartakiad of working groups in sports. Regional and city sports contests are held. The Republican School Chess Spartakiad has been held since 2005. The Minsk team is the winner of the 2011 Spartakiad.

The republican sports contest among the youth chess Schools is held annually. The Sports School No. 11 team is the winner of the 2008-2012 Youth Sports School Games.

Athletes from Minsk take part and win medals in the European and world championships.

In 2011, Anastasia Zezyulkina became the under-16 world champion.

In 2012, Anastasia Zezyulkina became the silver medalist of the U-20 World Championship.
