THE HISTORY OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF SWIMMING IN MINSK
Swimming is one of the most popular and popular sports. To date, 40 sets of medals are being awarded at the World and European Championships, and 34 sets of awards at the Olympic Games.
Swimming in Minsk began to develop in the mid-20s of the last century.
In 1928, Minsk swimmers, as part of the national team of Belarus, took part for the first time in the USSR Championship in Moscow in the program of the All-Union Spartakiad.
In 1936, a 25-meter swimming pool was built in Minsk, at the house of the Red Army, for the first time in the republic.
The first Minsk swimmers who became Champions of the USSR in 1937, 1938 were: Georgy Semenov, Leonid Mamut, Leonid Golubev.
Remarkable swimmers from Minsk, prize-winners and champions of the USSR made a great contribution to the development of swimming in 1937-41: L. Abrosimova, N.Samsonova, I. Dureiko, K. Madey, N.Kryukova, etc.
After the Great Patriotic War, they performed most successfully at all-Union competitions: I. Dureiko, A. Korsak, A. Shakhlay – became champions and prize-winners of the USSR championships, I. Dureiko – the USSR record holder.
For the first time in the history of Belarusian swimming in 1972, Natalia Ershova (Spartak, Pinsk) took part in the XX Olympic Games and took 14th place in the 100 m backstroke.
In 1976, at the XXI Olympic Games, Sergey Koplyakov (Spartak, Youth Sports School No. 4 Mingorono) won a silver medal as part of the 4×200 m freestyle relay.
In 1980, 3 Minsk residents took part in the XXII Olympic Games, who won: 2 gold (Sergey Koplyakov – 200 m freestyle and 4×200 m freestyle relay), 2 silver (S. Koplyakov – 100 m freestyle and Elvira Vasilkova, SKA – 100 m breaststroke) and 1 bronze (E. Vasilkova in the 4×100 m relay combined) medals. A. Buchenkov took 10th place in the 200 m butterfly. There were no winners at the other Olympiads. At all subsequent Olympiads, swimmers took places from 8 onwards. The city has trained: Honored Masters of Sports of the USSR – 2 people (Nikolai Guryev, Sergey Koplyakov), one Honored Master of Sports of the Republic of Belarus (Alexander Gukov).
In 1996, Alexander Gudkov won gold and bronze medals at the European Championships, Dmitry Kalinovsky – bronze. In 1997, Alexander Gukov became the World champion and two–time European champion, Oleg Rukhlevich – the bronze medalist of the European Championship.
Pavel Lagun, Dmitry Kaptur, Dmitry Kalinovsky, Alexander Gukov have become repeated winners and prize-winners of the World Cup stages.
In 2004, Svetlana Khokhlova won a silver medal at the European Championships.
In 2005, at the World Cup, Svetlana Khokhlova won 1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze medal, Dmitry Kaptur – a bronze medal.
At the World Championships, Alexandra Gerasimena became the second in the 50 m backstroke. In 2007 at the World University Games Svetlana Khokhlova becomes the owner of the bronze medal. At the 2008 European Championships, Svetlana Khokhlova took bronze in the 50 m butterfly.
9 Belarusian swimmers, including Svetlana Khokhlova and Andrey Radionov, took part in the XXIX Olympic Games in Beijing (China).
In 2009, at the World Universiade, Svetlana Khokhlova won the gold medal in the 50 m butterfly.
Olympic Games:
2012 (London): Svetlana Khokhlova – 20th place at 50 m/s. Vladimir Zhigarev took the 30th place in the 1500m distance. The women’s 4x100m relay in /st showed the 13th result.
World Championships (big and small water)
2009 (Rome): S.Khokhlova – 11m in p/f at distances of 50 v /st and 50 butt;
2010 (Dubai): S.Khokhlova – 13 and 14m at distances of 100 k/pl and 50 v/st, respectively;
2011 (Shanghai): Women’s 4×100 v/ct – 12m relay. V.Zhigarev – participant of the World Championship: 1500 v/ct – 22m, 800 v/ct – 24m.
2016(Canada): Pavel Sankovich took 3rd place in the 50m n/sp 23.03; the 4*50 relay combined men with Pavel Sankovich, Ilya Shimanovich, Evgeny Tsurkin and Anton Latkin also won 3rd place with a score of 1.32,49
2018(Huangzhou): Ilya Shimanovich won the silver medal twice in the 50m breaststroke 25.77 and 100m breaststroke 56.10, and also set two new Belarusian records.
European Championships (big and small water)
2009 (Istanbul): S.Khokhlova – 4m at a distance of 100 k / pl, 9m – 50 v / art. Women’s 4×50 combined relay – 4 m.
2010 (Budapest): S.Khokhlova showed 13 results for 50 batts. Women’s 4×100 m/st relay – 8 m.
2010 (Eindhoven): S.Khokhlova – 8m at distances of 100 v/st and 100 k/pl, V.Zhigarev – 7m at 1500 v/st, E.Dodolev – 11m at a distance of 50 batts.
2011 (Szczecin): S.Khokhlova – 3m at a distance of 50 batts, 4m at 50 v / art. V.Zhigarev showed the 19th result at 1500 v / art. The women’s 4×50 combined relay showed the 7th time.
2012 (Hungary): S.Khokhlova – 6m at a distance of 50 m/st and 7m in relay swimming 4×100 m/st. V.Zhigarev – 17m at 800 m/st and 21m at 1500 m/st .
2012 (Chartres): S.Khokhlova showed the 5th result in the 50 v/ct distance and the women’s 4×50 v/ct relay won the 3rd prize for the first time. V.Staselovich is 7m in the 4×50 combined relay. 2013(Herning): Pavel Sankovich took 3rd place in the 50m n/sp 23.45; Evgeny Tsurkin took 3rd place in the 50m butterfly 22.45 (Belarusian record).
2014 (Berlin): Evgeny Tsurkin won the title of champion in the 50m butterfly with a score of 23.00.
2015(Netanya): The men’s 4*50 m relay with Evgeny Tsurkin, Anton Latkin, Viktor Staselovich and Artyom Machekin won the 3rd place 1.25.01; the 4*50 m relay combined men (Pavel Sankovich,Ilya Shimanovich, Evgeny Tsurkin, Anton Latkin) took the 3rd place with a result of 1.33.21.
World University Games:
2009 (Belgrade): S.Khokhlova – 1m at a distance of 50 batts. Women’s 4x100m relay – 6m .
2011 (Shenzhen): S.Khokhlova – 4m at 50 butts and 4m at 50 v /art.
World Junior Championships:
2011 (Lima): E.Dodolev – 7m at a distance of 100 batts.
European Junior Championships:
2009 (Prague): V.Zhigarev – 15m at 800 v/st, 17m at 1500 v/st
2010 (Helsinki): E.Dodolev – 6m at 50 butt and 8m at 100 butt, V.Zhigarev – 7m at 800 v/st and 8m at 1500 v/st.
2011 (Belgrade): E.Dodolev – 4m at 100 butt and 10m at 50 butt, V.Staselovich – 9m at 50 n/sp.
2012 (Antwerp): V.Staselovich – 3m at a distance of 50 n/sp. 2.
2017 (Helsinki): Anastasia Shkurday became the champion in the 50 m butterfly.
European Youth Olympic Festival:
2017(Gyor): Anastasia Shkurday becomes the champion in the 100 m butterfly and the bronze medalist in the 100 m n/a.
